The shares were mixed after the opening and a slight loss on Tuesday, a day after gaining a foothold in a technical-led summit, as investors monitored the progress of the Russian-Ukrainian war and awaited further trips around the Fed's plans to tighten monetary policy.
Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.37% rose by 80 points, or 0.2%, to 35,002, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.85% fell below 0.1% to 4,581 and Nasdaq Composite COMP, -2.02% traded down 0.5% to 14,464.
Western leaders say they will increase sanctions against Moscow after evidence emerged of war crimes committed by Russian troops near Kyiv. Investors were waiting for the voices of Fed officials, including Gov. Lael Brainard, who was due to speak Tuesday morning.
