Gaudi2 is a second-generation processor by Habana Labs, an Israeli Intel AI chip purchased in late 2019 for about $ 2 billion. AI chip startups have been gaining major investment in recent years as AI computing is one of the fastest growing areas of data centers.

Finding a market share away from Nvidia has been a challenge as many AI researchers and companies have become accustomed to using Nvidia CUDA software. So in addition to the new AI computing chips, Intel told Reuters it was focused on the development of its software.

"CUDA is not a ditch Nvidia can stand on for a long time," said business executive at Habana Labs Eitan Medina, adding that Intel's software platform is open, free to download and use on GitHub, a software development platform. "Now the question is who can do the job successfully?"

Medina said Gaudi2 is twice as fast as the previous Habana AI chip and was developed in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s 7-nanometer transistor technology from 16 nanometers earlier. Usually when the size of the transistor is small, the chip is faster and more powerful.

Intel also introduced a new chip called Greco analytics function: taking the AI algorithm and making a prediction or identifying an object.

Sandra Rivera, head of Intel and AI data center, said the AI chip market is projected to grow by 25% a year over the next five years to reach nearly $ 50 billion. "We aim to invest and innovate to lead this market," he said, adding that increasing investment will be in software, to grow the Intel team and to buy other companies.
